Cyber Attack on Cape Town 2010 (Lausanne/Cape Town 2010, Memo #7)

On Thursday, October 21, 2010, the organizers of Cape Town 2010 reported that computer hackers have disrupted the IT system for the Congress.  They described it as “malicious hits from multiple locations.”

Why would someone do this?  Congress organizers said in a press release that this is the widest gathering of Christians in the history of the church.  They had plans to send congress proceedings out to 700 GlobaLink sites in 95 countries extending the congress to 100,000 people, including to countries where it might not be welcome.

Someone did not want the messages getting out there.

There was speculation among participants that the attackers originated in the Middle East or in China.  China has  barred 230 of its citizens from attending the Congress.  But the Lausanne leadership, while it had an inkling of who the hackers were behind this attack, did not make any statement about this to the press.

The good news is that after several days of trying to figure this out, the problem is fixed and Lausanne IT technicians are more ready for the next time this happens.
